Faculty and students of SHOU contributed their wisdom to the 2025 World Aquaculture Society and won international awards

Recently, Zhang Wenbo from the College of Fisheries and Life Science of SHOU was appointed by the Fishery and Fishing Vessel Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and invited by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Aquaculture Society (WAS) to attend the FAO Regional Seminar on the Promotion of Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture in Asia (GSA) and the 2025 World Aquaculture Society (WAS) in Hyderabad, India. During the visit, as an official representative of China, Zhang Wenbo actively participated in the formulation of international rules and demonstrated the leading research achievements of SHOU in the field of aquaculture. Benter Anyango, a doctoral student supervised by him, also won an important international award, achieving fruitful results.

At the FAO Regional Seminar on the Promotion of Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture in Asia held on November 10, Zhang Wenbo represented the Chinese government in all the seminar’s sessions. He joined experts from across Asia to discuss strategies for the promotion and implementation of the FAO Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture in the Asian region. Asia contributes over 90% of the world’s aquaculture output, yet it faces numerous challenges in terms of sustainable development. At the seminar, Zhang Wenbo actively participated in formulating regional communication strategies, identifying priority actions, and promoting the in-depth integration of the Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture framework with policy systems. His efforts made a positive contribution to elevating China’s voice and influence in the global aquaculture governance system.

Subsequently, Zhang Wenbo attended the 2025 World Aquaculture Society (WAS), a globally influential event in the field of aquaculture. With the theme of Opportunities, Choices and Prospects, this year’s conference attracted scientists, entrepreneurs and policymakers from 63 countries around the world. Zhang Wenbo delivered two academic presentations in succession: Assessing Aquaculture Transformation Initiatives in China and Case Study: Scaling Carp Sustainable Production Models. The latter was presented as a key case at the World Bank’s special session themed Harnessing the Waters: Sustainable Aquaculture. It systematically introduced China’s successful practices and models for the sustainable development of carp farming to global peers, sparking extensive attention and lively discussions among attending experts, scholars, policymakers and investors, and significantly enhancing the international influence of SHOU in this field.

在学术环节,她汇报了题为“Investigating the resistance of rice-field fisheries to transformation into rice-fish farming and pond aquaculture in Cambodia”的研究成果,因其研究的创新性与重要价值,荣获了“世界水产养殖学会-亚太分会最佳学生摘要奖”。

Benter Anyango, a doctoral candidate supervised by Professor Zhang Wenbo, served as a student director of WAS and actively participated in the conference’s organizational work, demonstrating the outstanding organizational and coordination capabilities of students from SHOU. In the academic session, she presented her research findings titled Investigating the resistance of rice-field fisheries to transformation into rice-fish farming and pond aquaculture in Cambodia. Recognized for the innovation and significant value of her research, she was awarded the World Aquaculture Society-Asia Pacific Chapter Best Student Abstract Award. This award not only affirms her personal research capabilities, but also highlights the remarkable outcomes of SHOU’s efforts in nurturing international high-level talents.
