To help new international students in China adapt to campus study and life as soon as possible, SHOU planned and carried out three themed practice activities before formal classes began, leading new international students in China to experience traditional Chinese culture and learn about the development achievements of the Lin-gang Special Area and Shanghai’s urban landscape. “Perceiving Chinese Culture, Gaining Insight into Folk Paper-cutting” was the first of the three themed practice activities.

At 13:00 on September 23, this activity was successfully held in Room B114 of the Liberal Arts Building. The activity was co-hosted by the student affairs office, the international student office, and the college of foreign language, and was organized by the college of foreign language. It organized international students to immersively experience the intangible cultural heritage of humanity—Chinese folk paper-cutting craftsmanship.

At the event, instructor ZHANG Yu from the college of foreign language first explained safety precautions related to paper-cutting, and briefly introduced the development history, folk connotations, and regional schools of paper-cutting art through a PPT presentation. The instructor also explained the good wishes embodied in red paper-cutting and demonstrated on site practical techniques such as paper folding, cutting, and carving.

With the assistance of volunteers, the students received paper-cutting materials and began to create by hand. Following the patterns, they completed paper-cutting works with auspicious meanings, such as window flowers and the double happiness character, and mounted their works for preservation. After completing their creations, the students displayed their works one by one, shared their experiences and reflections, and all participants took a group photo holding their works as a memento.

This activity used an immersive hands-on experience format to help new international students in China integrate into campus life more quickly. While experiencing the unique charm of paper-cutting as intangible cultural heritage, the students further deepened their understanding of Chinese folk culture and, through interaction and collaboration, built a platform for cultural exchange and mutual learning among Chinese and foreign youth.
